Severus Snape was a solitary creature. He kept to himself even among friends. It was how he had always lived his life. He trusted very few in life and life had shown him many times in his young life why that was so.

All the chairs in the Slytherin commons were pulled around highly polished dark cherry coffee tables, all except one. Two or three yards away one lone over stuffed dark green chair sat turned to the corner. It was Severus' corner. It was his chair. It was in this corner the lone floor lamp stood. The antique silver lamp stood tall and proud with the green frosted glass shade like all the other lamps in the commons. The darkness of the corner only accented by the round window that showed the depths of the darkened lake on the other side of the glass. Books of all size and classification sat around the chair like a fortress built up around it. They hadn't been there days ago but they had slowly accumulated.

It was hard to even see Severus sitting in the chair. The corner despite the lamp was rather dark and dreary. He sat sunk low into the chair, long stork like legs were stretched straight out in front of him the heel of one shoe precariously perched on a stone that jutted out just a hair further than those around it. Severus other leg was crossed over it at the ankle. He liked his drab little corner. He didn't bother the others and they all knew not to bother him. It had become standard protocal even for the prefects to warn first years about the mercurial Master Snape.

[Private to Pansy]
I was curious if you had an escourt or would like one to this upcoming party. If you didn't perhaps you would bestow me with the honor?

I do believe I inadvertantly tipped the balance of first year power this evening. It certainly isn't what I had intended when I noticed someone in my chair. Realy what sort of socially awkward misanthrope would want to sit in the chair facing the corner? Apparently the poor girl, the one occupying my chair, has been having trouble with being picked upon for being a halfblood and just wanted to sit away from the others and watch the squid play in the lake. I summoned a chair over for her so she could watch the squid and we had a rather lengthy discussion on the benefits of being a halfblood in a pureblood dominated society. She was a rather intelligent one. When the other first years came in from dinner and witnessed their outcast speaking conversationally with a seventh year they all converged. Why they thought they were invited was beyond me and I informed them their presence wasn't wanted or needed. One of them took offense and tried to give me a tongue lashing about knowing my place. After the berating she got for thinking she could speak to me, let alone in such a way, I had to remind her that Slytherins do not cry. I gave the wretch detention and she ran off while the others moved off to the middle of the commons to lavish attention on my seat stealer.

I do believe I have a pet first year, or perhaps a minion. At least my self inflicted solitude is back to the way I like it and there isn't anyone invading my corner.

I was angry with my friend: I told my wrath, my wrath did end. I was angry with my foe: I told it not, my wrath did grow. And I watered it in fears, Night and morning with my tears; And I sunned it with smiles, And with soft deceitful wiles. And it grew both day and night, Till it bore an apple bright. And my foe beheld it shine. And he knew that it was mine, And into my garden stole When the night had veiled the pole; In the morning glad I see My foe outstretched beneath the tree. )
